10 Parishes Festival of visual and performing arts
By Ulick Palmer

Ulick Palmer

Ulick prints large black and white photographs using traditional methods in a dark room. He is particularly inspired by landscape and architecture.

After retirement from my main career, I decided to expand my interest in photography. Having previously enrolled on a number of his short courses, I now signed up with Ron Frampton FRPS for a 5-year masters’ level course leading to the award of an Associateship of The Royal Photographic Society. Ron’s inspirational tuition was based at Dillington House and profited from the wealth of material in the local area.

In this digital age, I am one of the few still using the old analogue techniques. I use medium- and large-format film cameras and do all the developing and printing myself in a darkroom. The use of larger formats of film allows me to achieve high levels of definition which I then present in unusually large prints (20×24 inches/50×60 cm). This enables me to produce pictures with a strong presence.

I have a particular affinity with landscape and architecture for which the larger format cameras are admirably suited. All my images are in black and white
