Into the Light, Landscapes and Coastscapes of the West Country
I am at the beginning of my painting journey and this is my first exhibition. Its focus, Into the Light, is the landscapes and coastscapes of the West Country, taking in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, primarily along their northern coastline. Cornwall is well known for its wonderful light and the intersection of its rugged coast and seas. Devon and Somerset share these qualities, but have been less painted. My aim has been to play with the shifting hues and shades of light, the transition from sky to sea and land, and reflect the vibrancy of the ‘wildness’ that still remains in this wonderful part of the country.
The exhibition has a mixture of oils, watercolours and mixed media. For me, oils bring a unique solidity, texture and dimensionality to the flat canvas or board, whereas watercolours offer an exciting unpredictability as the water and pigment interact and find their own direction and patterns around the structure of your subject matter and the grain of the paper.
I take my inspiration from the talents of Hester Berry, Lucy Kent, Georgina Potter, Alex Edwards, Imogen Bone and Oliver Akers Douglas. If I get half way to their abilities I will be a happy man.
I am making great efforts to simplify my interpretation of what I see, moving away from the often obsessive detail and reality of photography with which I am more familiar, and towards a more abstract approach. It is hopefully the beginning of a long and fascinating journey.
